Burnt Offering (Jeanne Galzy, 1929)

A childless teacher approaching middle-age develops an unhealthy obsession with one of her students and builds an elaborate fantasy in which she supplants the child’s own mother. When the girl becomes ill, the teacher, who was a nurse during the war, volunteers her help. During this time, the fantasy comes dangerously close to the real world and this does not go unnoticed by the mother, who reports the teacher to her principal. The teacher is forced to accept a transfer to a different district and give up her dream of running away with the girl.
